What you missed this summer

Dr. Jeffry C. Davis, chair and professor of English and director of interdisciplinary studies, was recently appointed Dean of Humanities. In this role, he will oversee the departments of English, history, modern and classical languages and philosophy.

Provost Margaret Diddams said in an email to campus, “I look forward to Dr. Davis not only leading this division but also contributing to academic initiatives at the college.” She praised his academic integrity and experience working in interdisciplinary studies as factors in his new appointment.

Wheaton’s five-year capital campaign, “From the Heart, For the Kingdom,” ended with the conclusion of the 2017-18 academic year. In a campus-wide email, President Philip Ryken thanked the community and revealed that $187.1 million dollars were given in campaign gifts/commitments — more than 10 million over what was expected.

Ryken concluded: “Now more than ever, we are committed to shepherding our students through a unique liberal arts experience that is rooted in the person and work of Jesus Christ and prepares them for diverse callings over a lifetime of kingdom service.”

St. Augustine’s “Confessions” was announced as the CORE book for the 2018-19 school year. As part of the Christ at the Core curriculum initiative, there will be events and resources centered around the book offered throughout the year. Dean of Curriculum and Advising Sarah Miglio and Faculty Core Book Coordinator and Associate Professor of English Tiffany Eberle Kriner, said they hope students and faculty will read the book because “reading ‘Confessions’ leads us to consider who God is, how he pursues us, and what we desire.”
