Women’s Basketball extends win streak to six games

With big conference wins over North Central College and Carroll University, the Wheaton Women’s Basketball team continues to prove that they are one of the top teams in the CCIW.
From the get-go on Saturday, Jan 13, the Thunder outshot and outplayed the North Central Cardinals. Wheaton scored six unanswered points in the first quarter before North Central scored a three-pointer. By the end of the first quarter, the Thunder women were up 20-13.
A defensively dominated second quarter resulted in both teams only scoring single digits. Wheaton scored eight points in the second while North Central scored seven. The score at the half was 28-20.
After a fast three-pointer by senior Kelly Lawson to start the third quarter, Wheaton continued to control the game and maintain their lead. They outscored North Central 27-11 this quarter. Heading into the fourth quarter North Central tried to make a comeback, but ultimately, their deficit was insurmountable. Wheaton was outscored by the Cardinals 24-17 in the fourth quarter, but came out with the 72-55 “W.”
Yesterday night the Thunder hosted Carroll University for a CCIW matchup, and Wheaton put on quite the offensive and defensive show. The final score of the game was 82-36, and Wheaton led the whole game.
Sophomore forward Hannah Frazier scored the first two points of the game, and senior guard Maggie Dansdill was scoring almost as frequently as her teammate. Dansdill had two steals in the first half and was 2-2 from the free throw line. Wheaton lead the game 44-16 at the end of the first half.
Wheaton continued to control both sides of the court during the second half by scoring 38 points and holding Carroll to 20 points. Dansdill and Frazier both continued to lead their team with scoring, and Wheaton was able to take home another victory. The Thunder have won six games straight.
With only two days of separation, the Thunder women’s basketball team returns to action tomorrow night at 7:00pm. Wheaton will host Trinity Christian College of Illinois in King Arena in the Chrouser Sports Complex. Trinity Christian College is 9-12 overall this season.
Wheaton is now 12-4 overall so far this season, and their CCIW record is 6-2. In other news in the CCIW, the Illinois Wesleyan University women’s basketball team is currently ranked 18th in Division III women’s basketball as they have not lost since Nov. 25, 2017.
