Erika Kirk, Forgiveness and Personal Asceticism

How the practice of self-denial will heal our nation.

At the memorial service for Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Sept. 10, his wife, Erika Kirk, publicly forgave her husband’s murderer. This act of personal asceticism — an act of self-denial that allows the grace of God to work through us — enabled her to forgive her enemy rather than seek retribution. Her self-emptying act allowed our world to be touched by the grace of God, purifying it for a significant moment.
