The New CCM: Cautious Christian Music

Recent album release “Manna, Pt. 1” by Chris Renzema, one of Christian music’s most innovative artists, begins a conversation on the purpose of doubt in worship.

Like the album cover suggests, birthday cake and dirt are the introductions to Chris Renzema’s fourth and newest album, “Manna, Pt. 1.”  It’s an album of ambiguity – sweet and salty, crunchy and soft – and Renzema’s opening title track leans into this from the beginning. After a quick-paced and heavily strummed leading electric guitar – with hardly any production effects – for seven measures, Renzema takes a big breath, and sings a song like sandpaper.
